Summer Internship 2023

May 2023 – July 2023

I joined SG Cash as a Summer intern in 2023, fresh from completing my second year at NTU where I studied Business and Accountancy with a specialisation in Risk Analytics. Naturally, SG Cash’s Credit and Risk Management Internship Programme caught my attention due to its alignment with my academic interests.

I first got to know about SG Cash through a senior in school who shared about their positive experience in SG Cash with me. Not only did the internship offered an opportunity for me to delve deeper into my field of interest, but also demonstrated significant involvement for interns in day-to-day operations, which appealed to me greatly.

My favourite aspect of the Credit & Risk Management course was the hands-on application of risk management concepts across a diverse range of industries. The supportive atmosphere in the office fostered an environment conducive to learning and growth, allowing me to fully leverage the internship experience.

Throughout the internship, I acquired valuable skills and insights, particularly in credit risk measurement, loan underwriting, and communication. With the opportunity to assess nearly 20 cases over 10 weeks, I honed my ability to discern critical details in credit risk assessment. Additionally, frequent client interviews refined my communication skills in a professional setting. Aside from assessing cases, I was given the chance to analyse and reflect on a court case, further expanding my knowledge in credit risk assessment and risk management.

I will definitely recommend the Credit & Risk Management Internship Programme at SG Cash as it offers unparalleled exposure to credit risk across various industries, making SG Cash a wonderful place to set foot into the credit and risk management field. The programme also provides a supportive environment where staff encourages you to push your limits and reach your full potential.

The SG Cash Internship stood out for several reasons. It offered a hands-on learning experience that went beyond theoretical knowledge to include real-world applications of credit assessment, financial document analysis, and loan approval processes. The opportunity to engage with a variety of loan packages and participate in live case studies provided invaluable insights. Moreover, the supportive guidance from supervisors and the collaborative team environment fostered a comprehensive understanding of the sector’s dynamics.

During the five-week programme, I delved into the mandatory documents for loan approvals, mastered the nuances of conducting credit reviews, and learned the importance of weighing both quantitative and qualitative factors in decision-making processes. This experience has equipped me with a foundational understanding of credit and risk management principles, which will undoubtedly benefit my future career.

The programme emphasises practical application, coupled with the mentorship and opportunities for growth it provides. It serves as an excellent platform for students aspiring to enter the financial sector or those keen on gaining a deep understanding of credit and risk management.

I am Tan Hong Ting and I joined SG Cash in December 2023 for the Winter Internship. At that point in time, I was in my third year of study at Nanyang Technological University under Nanyang Business School specializing in Banking and Finance.

I got to know about SG Cash Internship Programme through my university’s career fair where I had the opportunity to speak to the employees there which became my future mentors when I started my internship. I thought that the programme was interesting as the company had many experiences and learnings for each batch of interns and there was a structured programme in place.

The Credit and Risk Management course provided great insight into the industry as it provided first-hand experience for interns. I was able to conduct interviews with our clients and partake in the decision-making process with regard to the loan applications that SG Cash receives. There were constant discussions with our mentors and the boss, making my own credit review and opinions feel very valued.

Throughout the duration of the course, I have a few takeaways that contributed holistically to my own personal and professional growth. The internship has equipped us with a strong knowledge of the credit review process from the start to the end – from assessing the guarantor’s information to the company’s overall health. Through the analysis process, we have learnt to make holistic and objective decisions by taking into account the interview insights as well as through more experiences of loan applications. I have also learnt to analyze various documents, like a bank statement, in a more efficient way than when I first started. Through this internship, I have also understood the importance of being confident when interacting with clients and knowing when to step in when the conversation has steered from the original question. This skill is important and transferable as it helps to maintain the reputation of the company and to portray to the other party that we know what we are doing. Independent learning is especially important during this course due to the large volumes of loan applications received and the short turnover time we have. This is valuable in my future career as it helps me to contribute better to the company.

I would definitely recommend the Credit and Risk Management course to others as it provides an amazing opportunity to gain insight into the industry, and be able to work on real cases and not just case studies. As an intern, having the chance to speak to clients was a surreal experience and I am grateful for the trust in me to engage with the client and understand more about the situation of the business. I was able to learn so much from this course with the guidance of the kind mentors and the boss. Through this programme, I got to build a foundation in the credit and risk management industry and gained transferable work skills which are applicable to any future career.
