Summer Internship 2021

May 2021 – July 2021

I am Lit Zheng Yao, Year 1 Undergraduate from Nanyang Business School at NTU. I had the opportunity to join SG Cash as an intern from 10 May 2021 to 30 July 2021 during my first year summer break. I had interest to major in Banking & Finance which drove me towards finance related internships.

I got to know about SG Cash Internship Programme in Credit & Risk Management through the job fair held in campus. As I attended the sharing conducted by SG Cash, I was interested in what the internship opportunity had to offer which drew me to apply for the position.

The Credit & Risk Management course was enriching and fulfilling. As part of the customer onboarding process includes a mandatory client site visit, the internship role required us to interact directly with potential clients to clarify any queries on financial metrics and to identify potential credit red flags. On top of the usual job role, we were also encouraged to do additional readings and real life case studies to enhance our learning beyond the job role.

From the Credit & Risk Management Internship, I have learnt the following skillsets:

  1. Ability to interpret financial statements
  2. Identify potential credit red flags from mandatory client site visits and bank statement analysis
  3. Ability to write credit memo and proposals to recommend/reject potential borrowers looking for financing
  4. Confidence and communication skills
  5. Working effectively as a team member.

I will definitely recommend the Credit & Risk Management course to others, especially to juniors starting their early experiences in the finance industry. This is because of the encouraging and enriching environment that SG Cash is able to provide to shape individuals and to build a strong foundation for better career development. The skillsets I took away from the internship served as a leverage for my subsequent internships and eventually my full-time role as a Credit Analyst in a financial institution.

Year 1 NBS Undergraduate 2021

In 2021, I commenced my 3-month summer internship with SG Cash during my second year as an undergraduate at Nanyang Technological University, where I was pursuing a degree in Banking and Finance at the Nanyang Business School.

I learnt about SG Cash through the school’s virtual career day, where I had attended SG Cash’s internship briefing on the company and role. I was drawn to the enriching internship opportunity to gain insight into credit and risk management and explore my interest in the industry.

I appreciate how the internship afforded me invaluable hands-on experience, enabling me to actively participate in assessing clients’ creditworthiness, conducting virtual site visits (due to Covid constraints) and client interviews, preparing loan documents and witnessing signing procedures. I was very grateful that the company had put in place systematic and thorough training to ease me into the tasks. I also appreciate that the management team is always generous in sharing their knowledge and experience. It is a conducive environment for personal and professional growth, as interns are entrusted with significant responsibilities in credit assessments within a supportive and guided atmosphere whilst working alongside a team of experienced mentors.

Through the course, I acquired knowledge on SME financing and deepened my understanding of the responsibilities of a Credit and Risk Management officer. Additionally, I honed job-specific skills and further developed soft skills. I learnt the critical importance of conducting thorough due diligence and compliance checks, maintaining clear communication and fostering an inquisitive mindset.

I will recommend the course to students eager to deepen their understanding of SME financing and Credit Risk. The hands-on opportunities and learning experience with the authentic day to day work at SG Cash would equip them with invaluable takeaways, enabling them to depart with skills transferable to their future pursuits

Postgraduate Internship 2021

August 2021 – October 2021

In August 2021, I joined the SG Cash Internship Programme as a master student while I was studying for the MSc Financial Engineering Programme at Nanyang Technological University. And I got to know about the SG Cash Internship Programme from one of our career consultants in our school faculty. At that time, I was eagerly looking for internship opportunities in the financial industry, and I was referred by our career consultant for this role. After a few rounds of interviews, I was so glad that I managed to pass the interview and get the chance to attend the SG Cash Internship Programme, and it turned out to be one of the most valuable experiences of my career life.

There are a lot of reasons why I liked this internship programme. The first and foremost is how well structured this programme was to make sure all joiners could develop and utilise their capabilities gradually and at their own pace. As an intern, at the beginning I was assigned to build models that are based on the real cases in the company, from which I can not only practice the knowledge and skills that I learned from school, but it also helps me to bridge the gap between book knowledge and real industrial experience. With the programme continuing, my models are improved and refined with each round of review by my senior colleagues, and with the guidance and help from my senior colleagues, I enjoyed every moment of building something from scratch using my knowledge and knowing that it would offer some help to the company. Apart from the everyday working and learning, another reason why I enjoyed this internship programme so much is the colleagues I met at SG Cash. Everyone in the company is approachable and willing to help when you have problems, be it at work or in life. They are a bunch of people to learn from and share laughter with. Gatherings after work were organised from time to time so colleagues could have a good time together.

If you ask me, what have I learned from this programme? I would say I learned the risk management-related knowledge and skills from everyday’s work, I also practiced my programming skills through the model-building, and I also learned how to communicate and how to work as a team together for our goal. But most importantly, this programme has got me well prepared for my future career, giving me a deeper understanding of what a professional in the financial industry should be like.

For those students who are interested in corporate lending and risk management-related careers, I would definitely recommend you take the chance to join this internship programme. You will be surprised at how much you will learn and improve in the end, and at that time, I really do hope you will feel the same way as I did about this valuable and memorable journey.

Winter Internship 2021

December 2021 – January 2022

I am writing to express my sincere appreciation for the invaluable experience I gained during my tenure as a Credit & Risk Management intern at SG Cash.

I joined SG Cash as a winter intern in December 2021 to January 2022, as a second year student at Nanyang Business School. I was pursuing a degree in Business, specializing in Banking and Finance, and sought opportunities to gain practical experience in the finance industry.

I became aware of SG Cash’s Internship Programme in Credit & Risk Management through a virtual career fair, organized by NBS Academy for Career Excellence (ACE). It was during this event that I had the pleasure of conversing with Mr. Kenneth Koh, the Managing Director of SG Cash. Mr. Koh’s insights into the internship programme and the company’s commitment to nurturing talent left a lasting impression on me, prompting me to delve deeper into the opportunities SG Cash had to offer.

One of the aspects I particularly appreciated about the Credit & Risk Management Internship was its comprehensive coverage of industry-relevant assessments. Through this internship, I managed to review a total of 15 SMEs ranging from different industries in Singapore while engaging in discussions with business owners and driving key credit conversations with the credit team for loan applications. The credit team has provided me with a blend of theoretical knowledge and hands-on experience, providing a holistic understanding of credit assessment, risk analysis, and mitigation strategies. Additionally, the opportunity to work alongside seasoned professionals in the industry was invaluable, allowing me to witness firsthand the intricacies of risk management in a dynamic financial environment.

Through the Credit & Risk Management course, I acquired a deep understanding of financial risk assessment methodologies, credit analysis techniques, and risk mitigation strategies. Moreover, I developed critical analytical skills and learned to navigate complex financial scenarios with confidence. By conducting thorough credit assessments, I gained practical expertise that I could not get from traditional classroom learning. The mentorship provided by seasoned professionals at SG Cash was instrumental in honing my skills and fostering a growth-oriented mindset.

Without hesitation, I would wholeheartedly recommend SG Cash’s Credit & Risk Management course to others seeking a rewarding learning experience in the finance sector. The program equips participants with essential skills and knowledge that are highly sought after in the industry. Furthermore, the exposure to real-world challenges and the opportunity to work alongside industry experts make it a standout choice for aspiring finance professionals.

I am immensely grateful for the enriching experience I had during my time at SG Cash. The internship not only deepened my understanding of credit and risk management but also instilled in me a sense of professionalism and dedication to excellence. I commend SG Cash for its commitment to nurturing talent and providing exceptional learning opportunities.

In conclusion, I extend my sincere appreciation to SG Cash for offering such a transformative internship programme. I am confident that future participants will find immense value in the Credit & Risk Management course, just as I did.

I wish SG Cash continued success in its endeavours.
